Why did anyone come to launch DoILikeIt?
Because some of the people who make and sell wine want to know what those of us who drink them actually think. Rosé makers wonder if their wine is too pink, for example, and Burgundians if they should switch to screwcaps… And there are the questions wine drinkers would like to ask each other…
Why the funny name?
We wanted to illustrate that this is a different kind of business. It’s not about people stopping you in the street with a clipboard full of questions, and it’s not about focus groups, (a dozen strangers in a room with a two-way mirror), and it’s not about telephone calls from strangers. DoILikeIt? is all about what giving you the chance to let us know what you like and dislike. And why you feel the way you do?
Who started the company?
Three of the UK’s leading wine professionals: Judy Kendrick; Hazel Murphy, and Robert Joseph, with over 75 years experience in wine between them. Click here to find out more about them.
How does DoILikeIt? work?
DoILikeIt? works on its own behalf, and on behalf of wine producers across the world who want to know how wine drinkers feel about the flavour of their wine, about the shape and colour of the bottle and label, the name and price. It’s a little like the way producers of films and plays try out previews before their first public performance. A label that is popular among wine drinkers in France might get a thumbs-down in Britain. American wine drinkers might favour an oakier or fruitier style. So, we post bottles to members of the DoILikeIt? community to try with their friends, and we sample them with members of the wine drinkers at public events.
What if I don’t know very much about wine?
The DoILikeIt? communities include everyone, from keen wine buffs to people who freely admit that they have little real knowledge of grape varieties and regions beyond the ones they drink and like.
What kinds of wine will you send me?
When you join DoILikeIt? you tell us about the styles you do and don’t like. So, for example, we won’t normally send Barossa Shiraz to people who really dislike Australian reds.
What happens if I don’t send you back my thoughts on a trial?
DoILikeIt? relies on the feedback from its members. If members don’t tell us what they think, sadly, we’ll have to stop sending them bottles.
What happens if the people tasting the wine have different views on it?
Tastes in wine are – naturally – subjective. Which is why we value the comments we get from DoILikeIt? members and their friends. When you complete the online form after each test, there is space for you to describe what other people thought. More ideally, however, we’d love your friends to join our community and fill in their own form – and be included among the people to whom we’ll be sending wines in the future.
What do you do apart from sending bottles of wine to people?
We invite people to share their views on wines we pour at exhibitions and sporting events, we run our own tasting events to which we invite community members, and we run surveys online at www.doilikeit.com
I’d like to organise a tasting of my own – is there any way I can work with DoILikeIt? for this?
Please let us know at info@doilikeit.com. On occasion we send members sets of wines to taste with up to 12 other people. Some of these tastings are run online, using Skype and Twitter
How often will I get wine?
That will depend on the number of tests we are asked to run – and on the type of wine. (If you have told us you prefer to never drink sweet wine for example, we won’t include you in any sweet wine tests). Also, it will depend on the test you have already taken part in. If, for example, we have already discovered your feelings about screwcaps or labels with animals, we won’t include you in another test about either of those…
Do we get to see the results?
Some of the tests we run are – naturally – confidential. In many cases, however, we publish the results on www.doilikeit.com
What if I want to buy the wine we taste in a trial?
DoILikeIt? is most emphatically not in the business of selling wine. Where possible and appropriate, we will provide a link to a way in which the wine might be bought. But please bear in mind that, in many cases, the wines tested are prototypes, if only in the design of their bottles and labels. In these cases, obviously there will be no way to buy them at the time. However, if and when those wines do become available, we’ll post that information on www.doilikeit.com.
How will I know about new DoILikeIt? tests?
You have the option of inviting DoILikeIt? to contact you directly, or you can follow DoILikeIt? on Twitter or Facebook.
Will you share my information with anyone else? / How safe is my personal information?
We promise not to share your information with anybody else, and your personal information is kept securely for exclusive use by DoILikeIt?.
Do you just deal with wine?
Initially, at least, DoILikeIt? will focus exclusively on wine – and associated items such as glasses, corkscrews etc.
